Pip value calculator (rand & dollars)

See what one pip or point is worth on 1 lot, a mini lot and a micro lot, in rand and in dollars, at today's exchange rates.

How it works

  1. A pip is the standard price step: 0.0001 on most pairs, 0.01 on JPY pairs, $0.10 on gold and $0.01 on silver. Indices, oil and crypto are measured in points.
  2. Pip value in the quote currency = pip size × contract size (100,000 units on forex, 100 oz on gold).
  3. That is converted into US dollars and rand with live exchange rates, refreshed every 15 minutes.
  4. Mini (0.1) and micro (0.01) lots are simply a tenth and a hundredth of the standard lot value.

Frequently asked questions

How much is 1 pip worth in rand?

On EUR/USD, GBP/USD and other pairs quoted in dollars, one pip on 1 standard lot is $10, so its rand value is $10 × the USD/ZAR rate (about R180 at R18/$). On 0.01 lots it is a hundredth of that.

How much is a pip on gold?

On a standard 100-ounce gold contract one pip ($0.10) is worth $10 per lot and a $1 move is worth $100 per lot. Some brokers call $0.01 a point and $0.10 a pip; check your platform.

What is a pip on US30 or NAS100?

Indices are measured in points, not pips. On a typical 1-contract CFD a 1-point move is worth $1 per lot, but brokers differ a lot (some use $10 or $0.10), so set the contract size to your broker's.

Why does the pip value of USD/ZAR change?

USD/ZAR is quoted in rand, so a pip is R10 per lot. In dollars that changes with the exchange rate. For pairs quoted in yen, francs or other currencies, the value in rand moves with those rates too.
